Description: Soluble Fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt-1), also known as soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 1 (sVEGFR-1), is a protein that plays a critical role in the regulation of angiogenesis, the process of forming new blood vessels from pre-existing vessels. It is a soluble form of the Flt-1 receptor, which is normally found on the surface of endothelial cells that line the interior surface of blood vessels. sFlt-1 functions by binding to vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs), which are molecules that promote the growth of new blood vessels. By sequestering VEGF, sFlt-1 prevents it from interacting with its cell surface receptor, thus inhibiting the signaling pathways that lead to angiogenesis. This mechanism is important in various physiological and pathological processes, including embryonic development, wound healing, and the growth of tumors.
