Description: Placental-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) is a metalloproteinase that belongs to the zinc finger family. Its main substrate is insulin-like growth factor binding protein 4 (IGFBP-4). This cleavage leads to the release of bound IGF, which plays an important role in promoting cell differentiation and proliferation. After pregnancy, embryonic trophoblast cells synthesize large amounts of PAPP-A and release it into the peripheral blood of both the mother and the fetus. The cumulative concentration in the mother's blood increases nearly 100 times, but pathological pregnancies can cause a sudden decrease in content. PAPP-A was first discovered in pregnant women's serum as a marker for early screening of Down syndrome during pregnancy and as a marker for unstable atherosclerotic plaques.
