Description:
Interleukin-17A (IL-17A), commonly known as IL-17, was first discovered at the transcriptional level through a mouse T cell hybridoma. Several years later, researchers found that IL-17A is expressed in CD4+ T cells and can induce IL-6 in fibroblasts. Subsequently, more studies revealed that IL-17A is a major mediator of T cell communication with the hematopoietic system and overexpression in vivo leads to extramedullary granulopoiesis. In the 21st century, significant progress has been made in understanding IL-17A. Research has shown that Th17 cell lineage commitment is independent of traditional activation pathways such as STAT4 and STAT6, meaning that IL-17A and other inflammatory factors like IL-6 are not identical. IL-17A plays a key role in host defense against various microbial pathogens and tissue inflammation, making it an important target for drug discovery in treating various forms of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
