Description:
Glypican-3 (GPC3) is a 65 kD protein composed of 580 amino acids, and is a heparan sulfate proteoglycan that binds to the cell membrane through glycosylphosphatidylinositol. This protein is expressed in the liver and kidneys of healthy fetuses, but is hardly expressed in any other tissues except for placental tissue in adults. On the contrary, GPC3 is specifically expressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), clear cell carcinoma of the ovary, melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma of the lung, hepatoblastoma, Wilms' tumor (nephroblastoma), yolk sac tumor, and some pediatric cancers. Although the exact function of GPC3 is not yet clear, it has been strongly suggested that it is related to the malignancy of HCC. GPC3 has been identified as a promising target for cancer immunotherapy.
