Equine Serum Amyloid A (SAA) is a major acute-phase protein synthesized primarily by the liver in response to inflammatory stimuli, such as infection, trauma, or stress. It belongs to the SAA protein family, which is evolutionarily conserved across vertebrates. In horses, SAA is a small (approximately 12–14 kDa), highly conserved apolipoprotein that rapidly increases in serum concentration during systemic inflammation, often rising 100- to 1000-fold within 24–48 hours of an inflammatory trigger.
