Description:
Influenza C virus usually infects only human and pigs. Although influenza C is less prevalent in the population than influenza A and B, it can also cause seasonal epidemics in some places. The hemagglutinin-esterase fusion (HEF) glycoprotein mediates Influenza C virus entry by binding 9-O-acetylated sialic acids and possessing receptor-destroying esterase activity. Influenza C causes mild respiratory illness but may exacerbate asthma in children. Anti-HEF mAbs block viral fusion and inform universal vaccine designs.
