Description: Yersinia pestis is a Gram negative bacterium listed as a category A infective agent that causes bubonic, septicemic, and pneumonic plague. The latter form is of special interest to biodefense, as it is highly lethal and transmitted through aerosol. The Y. pestis virulence (V) antigen has been identified as a potent protective antigen (PA) against plague and has consequently been evaluated as a subunit vaccine candidate and as a target for passive immunotherapy. V antigen is required for translocation of bacterial effector proteins into host cells.
