Description: Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a bacterium that causes respiratory infections in humans, including pneumonia, bronchitis, and tracheobronchitis. It is a member of the class Mollicutes and the only species within the genus Mycoplasma known to infect humans. Unlike other bacteria, Mycoplasma pneumoniae lacks a cell wall, which contributes to its unique characteristics and challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Diagnosis of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection can be challenging, as the symptoms are similar to those of other respiratory infections. Laboratory tests, such as serology (measuring specific antibodies in the blood) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing, are used to confirm the presence of the bacterium.
